JIMAMI TOFU

Directed by Jason Chan and Christian Lee

Starring Jason Chan, Mari Yamamoto, Rino Nakasone, Christian Lee

Winner of the Audience Choice Award at the Hawaii International Film Festival, JIMAMI TOFU broke all records for a local film when released theatrically by SFS in March 2018 – it ran continuously in Singapore cinemas for two whole years till March 2020. Director-actors Jason and Christian were present at every screening, together with SFS Chairman Kenneth Tan, to introduce the film and mingle with audiences. JIMAMI TOFU struck a chord with everyone because it is about food and about romance, and it is a Singapore-Japan cross-cultural kaleidoscope of drama, humour, love, tears, laughter, and idiosyncrasies, written and brought to life with such sensitivity and vividness that Okinawans, Americans, Singaporeans, and cinephiles of many other nationalities all applauded and love the film. An aspiring Singaporean chef meets a successful Japanese food critic, falls in and out of love, and trains under an older master chef who has a special connection with the lady who’s changed from complimenting to criticising the young man’s culinary skills. How not to be captivated by such a delightful cinematic tale?
