JFF 2019: ONE CUT OF THE DEAD カメラを止めるな!
January 19 @ 3:20 pm - 5:20 pm
2017 / 96 min / Comedy horror / Japanese with English subtitles / NC16 (Some Coarse Language)
Dir. Shinichirou UEDA 上田 慎一郎
A film crew shoots a zombie movie in a shabby, abandoned warehouse, rumoured to be the site of military experiments. Out of the blue, actual zombies appear and terrorise the crew!
This might sound like a plot of a clichéd zombie film. But UEDA offers a fresh take. The film starts with a non-stop one-take 37 minute shot, then switches direction and completely disassembles the zombie genre. Fresh from winning the SGIFF Audience Choice Award, One Cut of the Dead is one of the biggest Japanese indie hits of 2018!
*This film will also be screened on 18 Jan. Click here for more information.
As a junior high school student, UEDA used to make short films with his classmates and continued to hone his skills and passion even after graduation. In 2010 he formed the film company PANPOKOPINA (パンポコピーナ) and to date, his films have received 20 grand-prize awards at various film festivals. In 2015 he made his commercial film debut with a short film in the omnibus film project Neko Manma.
With his personal slogan of “Making films which will still be fun after 100 years”, UEDA strives to make entertaining films and his latest work One Cut of the Dead is a perfect example of that.
