Programmer’s Note by Eternality Tan
This is the first time I’ve ever seen a deep space film dealing head-on with sex and sexuality, and for that reason, I think it is an admirable breakthrough for Claire Denis (who turns 73 this year), the esteemed director of such works as CHOCOLAT (1988), BEAU TRAVAIL (1999) and 35 SHOTS OF RUM (2008).
I’m sure HIGH LIFE will not only please fans of the filmmaker, but also those who are into edgier genre movies with a strong arthouse DNA. It also feels different from the typical sci-fi movie in the sense that it is almost organic in its treatment, rather than operating as an indulgent exercise in style or an exuberant showcase of filmmaking bravura.
Much of the film tackles philosophical questions about mortality, and very often via the human fascination with primal sexual desires – and sex fluids. I hope you find the film enjoyable and provocative.
